Women Speak Through Dance in Cape Verde

Nicole Monteiro

This is a video I shot in Santiago, Cape Verde of the Batuque, the traditional women's percussion rhythm and dance. Women play poly-rhythmic songs on homemade 'drums' made of sheets and other cloth bundled inside plastic bags.  They sit in a circle and sing. Occasionally one of the women jumps in the middle to perform a shaky hip dance.  It's practiced primarily in Santiago and is associated with the culture's African roots.  You'll love it!
